Byng tennis team in good shape after Day 1 of Class 4A State Tournament

Oklahoma City —    The Byng High School boys tennis team was in the driver’s seat after a good Friday, advancing all four of its entrants into the semifinals of the Class 4A State Tournament at the Oklahoma City Tennis Center.

   Byng was the only school to have all four of its entrants reach the semifinals. Ada, Henryetta and Mount St. Mary’s had two advance to the semis.

   Coach Alan Simpson’s Pirates entered the tournament with their No. 2 Doubles team of Montana Sellers and Paul Snyder as the top seed. Byng’s No. 1 Doubles combination of Neil Jorgensen and Kai Jorgensen was seeded second, as was No. 2 Singles entrant Dylan West. The Pirates’ No. 1 Singles player, Caleb Shaw, was seeded fourth.

   Friday’s results were a perfect 8-0 day for Byng.

   At No. 1 Singles, Shaw knocked off Victory Christian’s Ethan Thomas, 6-1, 6-0 in the first round and Ada’s Zack Whelchel, 6-3, 6-4 in the quarterfinals. Entering Saturday’s semifinals, Shaw had a perfect 10-0 record in state competition after going 4-0 as a freshman on his way to the state championship and 4-0 as a sophomore on the way to another crown.

   West, at No. 2 Singles, breezed through the first two rounds, blitzing Wagoner’s Tanner Epperson, 6-0, 6-0 in the opening round and Perry’s Geoff Hogan, 6-0, 6-0 in the second.

   At No. 1 Doubles, the Jorgensen tandem upended Riverfield Academy’s Ryan Cortez and Kyle Taubman, 6-3, 6-1 in the first round before shredding Nowata’s Seth Glasscock and Nate Moore, 6-0, 6-0 in the quarterfinals.

   Sellers and Snyder had a relatively easy time through their first two rounds by acing Cam Adney and Ben Osborn of Mount St. Mary in their opener and routing Nowata’s Will Luster and Cody Wright, 6-1, 6-1 in the second round.

   The semifinals were set to begin Saturday morning, while the finals were slated for later that evening.
