Cougars have trouble putting Durant away

Ada —

The Ada Cougars avoided the upset bug Tuesday night inside the Cougar Activity Center, but it sure wasn’t easy.

The Cougars led by seven with just over two minutes to play, but a pesky Durant squad pulled within one in the closing seconds before Ada was able to hang on for a tense 50-47 victory.

The Cougars improved to 8-6 on the year and will meet Woodward at 3 p.m. today in the first round of the 2013 Newcastle Tournament, while Durant left town at 6-12.

Easton Pingleton sped down the court for a layup after teammate D’Angelo Dunn poked the ball away from a Durant player, and that gave the Cougars a 48-41 lead.

Durant playmaker Cole Hughes then hit a 3-point basket, drawing Durant to within 48-44 with 2:02 to play.

After a timeout, Ada ran 58 seconds off the clock before the Lions began to foul. Durant needed to foul the Cougars three time before Ada was in the bonus, and finally Pingleton stepped to the line with 49.5 ticks left for a one-and-one attempt.
