Oklahoma City — OKLAHOMA CITY – The Byng High School boys tennis squad, fueled by a championship finish from Neil Jorgensen and Kai Jorgensen at No. 1 Doubles, claimed third place Wednesday at the 16-team Guthrie Tournament at the Oklahoma City Tennis Center.

The Jorgensens were a perfect 4-0 in the tournament as they knocked off Heritage Hall’s Kennedy and Lai in straight sets, 6-3, 7-5 for the championship. They stunned the top-seeded Carl Albert High School No. 1 doubles team in the semifinals to reach the championship.

“They played incredible. Heritage Hall is a dominant team and to beat them in straight sets is something,” said Byng head coach Alan Simpson.

Also for the Pirates, their No. 2 Doubles team of Paul Snyder and Montana Sellers settled for fourth place after going 2-2 in the tournament.

At No. 2 Singles, Byng’s Dylan West was a 6-2, 6-1 winner over Stillwater’s Noah Smith for fifth place as West posted a 3-1 record on the day.

Caleb Shaw, competing at No. 1 Singles for the Pirates, took the consolation title (ninth place) with a 4-6, 6-3, 10-8 win over Carl Albert’s Bryce Hebrink. Shaw finished with a 3-1 record for the tournament.

Heritage Hall claimed the team title with a score of 60, followed by Oklahoma Christian School (48), Byng (46), Tulsa Edison (45) and Deer Creek (42).

“This was a marquee tournament. It wasn’t like a Sunrise Donut Invitational. I was real pleased with our play,” Simpson said.

The Byng girls will play in the Duncan Tournament today, while the boys will compete in the same event Saturday.

OKLAHOMA CITY — The Ada High School girls’ tennis team captured fourth place on Tuesday while the Cougar boys ended up sixth on Wednesday at the Guthrie Tournament at the Oklahoma City Tennis Center.

GIRLS

The girls’ effort was fueled by third-place finishes from their No. 1 and No. 2 Doubles teams.

At No. 1 Doubles, the Lady Cougars’ Natalie Keel and Karsen Sheffield combined for a 6-1, 6-3 victory over the tandem from Carl Albert to secure third place. At No. 2 Doubles, Meneé Thomsen and Mikala Whelchel teamed up for an extended 6-1, 3-6, 10-4 victory over the other Carl Albert team.

Ada’s Haley Dean captured fifth place at No. 2 Singles with a 6-2, 6-1 decision over Perry’s Alyssa Hall in her final match, while the Lady Cougars’ Taylor Wood took seventh place at No. 1 Singles with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Stillwater’s Ana Solis.

Duncan captured the team title with a score of 62, followed by Heritage Hall (52), Carl Albert (48) and Ada (46).

Heritage Hall took the team championship with a score of 60, followed by Oklahoma Christian School (48), Byng (46), Tulsa Edison (45), Deer Creek (43) and Ada (36).

The Cougars’ highest finish came at No. 2 Singles as Charlie Hansen settled for fourth after dropping his final match.

Ada’s Zach Whelchel, competing at No. 1 Singles, won by injury default for seventh place.

The Cougars’ Daniel Carpenter and Chad Whittington finished eighth after losing their final match of the tournament and Ada’s Hunter Frazier and Nemo Marin combined for a 7-5, 6-4 victory over Piedmont to capture the consolation crown (ninth place).
