Cougs clip McAlester

Ada — Micah Simmer didn’t have his best stuff on the mound against rival McAlester on a cold, blustery evening at Cougar Field.

However, the Ada senior kept pitching his way into trouble and pitching his way right out in the Cougars’ 5-2 win Monday over the Buffaloes.

“On the mound he probably wasn’t as sharp as he normally is, but he threw well enough to keep us in the game and got some double-play balls when we needed them,” said Ada head coach Elliott Alberson.

Ada — ranked No. 12 in Class 4A — ran its win streak to eight games, improving to 15-3 on the year. McAlester left town at 12-12.

“I’m very pleased with where we’re at. We’ve been pretty consistent throughout the year,” Alberson said. “I’ve talked to the kids about that kind of stuff. We’ve finished games a whole lot better than we did last year.”

Alberson said victories over McAlester are sweet indeed.

“It’s always nice, for sure.” he said.

Simmer helped his own cause by going 3-for-4 with a home run and two doubles.

“He swung the bat really, really well,” Alberson said.

Simmer and the Ada defense helped strand 10 McAlester baserunners.

In the top of the first, Simmer gave up a leadoff single to Taylor Mullins before hitting the next two batters to load the bases with no outs. Not exactly how you would like to start the game against your old nemesis.

But Brandon Green of McAlester hit a line drive back to Simmer, who completed the double play by recording the second out at third base. He then got Zac Baugh to hit into a fielder’s choice to escape the inning unscathed.

Simmer found himself in a another mess to start the top of the second inning, surrendering consecutive singles to Andrew McBride, Chad Meadows and Michael Hyden that produced a run and left two McAlester players on the base paths with no outs. But Simmer got the top of the McAlester batting order to ground out three straight times, leaving the visitors with a 1-0 lead.
