Local trio to tangle in Roff

Roff —

The Class A baseball regional at Roff will certainly have an area flavor as play unfolds Thursday in Roff.

The third-ranked Tigers, 19-11 on the season, will be joined by two other area teams in Vanoss and Stratford, along with 20th-ranked Ripley.

“You have to figure that whoever is playing well has the best chance. There are a couple of, two or three teams that have the opportunity to win this,” said Roff head coach Ead Simon. “Anybody on any given pitch can win this. You have to bring your ‘A’ game and be ready to play at this point in the season."

The Tigers will face Vanoss in the regional opener at 11 a.m. Thursday, while Stratford and Ripley will do battle at 1 p.m. in the other first-round clash. The two winners will then square off at 3 p.m., while the two losers go head-to-head at 5 p.m. in an elimination game to wrap up the first day of action.

Play continues on Friday (with games at 4 p.m. and 6 p.m.) with the possibility of an if-necessary game on Saturday.

Though Vanoss and Stratford are in the area, Roff has not played either team this spring. The Tigers did play Vanoss in the fall.

As senior Walker Whitworth was bombing in the final five 3-point shots of his remarkable Ada High career, he was resetting the school’s triples record at 151. Across the way at the A-Town Barber Shop, barber Erick Gray did not even know he owned the record of 146, much less that someone was breaking it.
