The Latta-Stonewall first-round matchup Thursday night at the second annual Highway 1 Classic softball tournament turned out to be good to the last out.
Latta’s Savannah Humphrey hit a soft single just over the head of Stonewall shortstop Breann Gipson with two outs in the top of the eighth inning that drove in the winning run in a topsy-turvy 13-10 win over the Lady Longhorns. Latta would score two more error-aided runs — and scored all three with two outs — before LHS hurler Brianna Hanson recorded the first three-up, three-down inning in the contest to close Stonewall out.
Coach Jim Foster’s Latta bunch, ranked No. 7 in Class 4A, improved to 12-9 on the year, while Stonewall (No. 4 in 2A) slipped to 18-5.
In the final game of the night Thursday, Byng bounced Coalgate 9-0 to advance in the winner’s bracket. The Lady Pirates (No. 6 in Class 5A) improved to 17-6, while the Lady Wildcats (No. 15 in 4A) fell to 11-12.
