NOTEWORTHY: Three Tupelo players scored in double figures, but Varnum held on for a 66-63 win over the Tigers on Tuesday in the first round of the STAR Tournament at Konawa High School. Chisum Henry led the way for Konawa with 16 points, John Umsted followed with 15 and Corey McCollum finished with 11. McCollum also pulled down nine rebounds and Umsted registered eight. The Tigers trailed 17-10 after one quarter, 33-28 at halftime and 47-45 through three periods. Varnum (No. 15 in Class B) had five 3-pointers on the night and got a game-high 31 points from senior Tyler Miller. Trevor Smith hit four triples and finished with 13 points for the Whippets.

COACH’S QUOTE: “I thought we played fairly well. Varnum made one more play than we did. That is what it came down to,” — Tupelo head coach Clay Weller.

NOTEWORTHY: Gage Burns and Tanner Dees tossed in 11 points apiece as Stonewall put the defensive clamps on Coalgate for a 41-35 victory on Tuesday night in the first round of the STAR Tournament at Konawa High School. Chase Finley and Dakota Morgan also tacked on seven points apiece for the winners. Dakota Powell scored 16 points, including five 3-pointers, to pace the Wildcats in a losing cause and C.J. Bills added 11 points. The two teams were tied at 7-all at the end of the first, before the Longhorns outscored Coalgate, 10-4 in the second, and 13-6 in the third. The Wildcats made it closer by outscoring Stonewall, 18-11, in the fourth.
