Roff stings Sterling in Class A semifinal

Oklahoma City —    The top-ranked Roff Tigers overcame a 4-2 deficit with a three-run sixth inning in registering a 5-4 victory over Sterling on Friday in the semifinals of the Class A state baseball tournament on Palmer Field at Dolese Park.

Roff, which improved to 29-7 with the win, advanced to the Class A state championship game, where it faced third-ranked Binger-Oney.

“We put ourselves in a bad spot with errors and base-running mistakes, but we kept fighting,” said Roff head coach Ead Simon. “We were resilient. We didn’t play real sharp, but we found a way to win.”

Mike Anderson (8-1) got the pitching victory after working six complete innings. Dalton Reed was credited with the save after throwing the seventh. Though all four runs came off Anderson, only one was earned. Anderson surrendered six hits, walked only two and struck out six.

The Tigers’ three-run sixth began with Cade Carpenter’s leadoff single. Hunter Larsh reached on an error, and C.J. Johnson executed a bunt single to load up the bases. Rayce Stephens then drew a bases-loaded walk to pull Roff within 4-3.

Another Sterling error tied it up at 4-all. Reed was intentionally walked, and Cruz Villafranco later delivered an RBI infield single for what proved to be the game-winning score.

“It was one of the tougher at-bats that I’ve went through this year,” Villafranco said. “It felt pretty long going down the base line there. I didn’t know what happened to the ball and when I hit the bag, I heard the mitt pop and I knew I was safe. Then I saw the run go across.”

Villafranco went 2-for-4 from the plate with two runs batted in as the Tigers compiled eight hits.

Trailing 1-0, Roff scored twice in the bottom of the first inning off a run-scoring single by Villafranco and a Larsh RBI off a fielder’s choice.

There were seven errors in the game — four by Sterling and three by the Tigers.

Kyle Jung had half of Sterling’s six hits, going 3-for-3.
