Latta helps Cheyenne knock off Latta, 47-31

Ada — The Cheyenne Lady Bears showed why they are ranked No. 1 in Class A as they cruised past local 2A powerhouse Latta 47-31 Thursday at the 2013 Mid-America Classic.

Cheyenne forced the Lady Panthers to play an uptempo game that resulted in Latta shooting a dismal 13-of-51 (25.4%) from the field.

And Ironically it was sophomore point guard Morgan Latta who did a lot of the damage for the Lady Bears. She would finish with 12 points to lead Cheyenne’s balanceds scoring attack.

Cheyenne got on the board first when Kate Sanders made a nice assist to fellow junior, Taylor Swisher at the 6:25 mark. After a Latta turnover Monti Sappenfield knocked down a three to go up 5-0.

Latta got on the board at the 4:30 mark after Shelbey Parnacher found Lainie Baker in the paint for a 5-2 score. Cheyenne scored on the other end when Kaylie Springer found Kate Sander on the post for a 7-2 advantage with 4:00 on the clock.

Taryn Wood scored her first basket of the game when she nailed a three pointer to bring Latta within two, 7-5. Wood was then fouled and hit both charity shots to tie it up seven all.

However, Cheyenne went on a 15-0 run to close the first quarter fueled by a trio of 3-point baskets — to forge a 22-7 lead.

Cheyenne hit another 3-pointer to start the second period as Lynanne Hendrickson banked one in from the top of the key giving her team a 25-7 edge.

Baker had a putback at the 6:35 mark to end Latta's dry spell. Baker scored again at the 5:40 mark when Diamond Hill found her open inside to get Latta within 14 at 25-11. Cheyenne out scored Latta 7-2 over the final minutes of the second quarter to go into the locker room at the half with a comfortable 32-13 advantage.

Cheyenne pushed the lead to as much as 23 in third quarter led by the outstanding play of sophomore point guard, Morgan Latta.
