East Central University tennis teams claim victories over Seminole State

The East Central University men’s tennis team broke a four-match losing streak with a 6-3 win over Seminole State Monday at the ECU tennis courts.

The Tigers (3-8, 0-1 GAC) started the match by winning two of the three doubles matches. Senior Stefan Stein and junior Andrew Cabato defeated Wikus Myburgh and Tyler Bridges at No. 1 doubles (8-2), and sophomores Max DeJuan and Marc Fillat earned an 8-3 win over Mitchell Vechione and Dimitar Komov.

Fillat, DeJuan, sophomore Victor Blasco and junior Julian Caminos then earned the win for ECU with singles wins. Fillat defeated Bridges at No. 3 singles 6-4, 6-1, Blasco earned a 6-1, 6-1 win over Alex Brown at No. 4 singles and Caminos defeated Aramis Azucey 6-4, 6-2 at No. 5 singles for the needed five points. DeJuan then added a 3-6, 6-3, 10-6 win over Myburg at No. 2 singles for the final point of the match.

ECU will be idle until April l1, when they play the first of three straight matches over a three-day span. The Tigers will face Southeastern Oklahoma State on April 11, Harding on April 12 and Arkansas-Fort Smith on April 13 — all on the road.

ECU Women Beat Seminole State

ADA – The East Central University women’s tennis team moved to .500 on the season with a 6-3 win over Seminole State Monday at the ECU tennis courts.

The Lady Tigers (5-5, 2-1 GAC) began the match by earning wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. Junior Mariah Vargas and sophomore Katelin Threet defeated Haley Pope and Hannah Tomlinson 8-2, and sophomore Bernardita Muscillo and junior Agostina Moran earned an 8-0 win over Kirby Shannon and Ashley Bryen at No. 3 doubles for the 2-1 lead.

    Gabe Simons jump-started the Ada offense with his three-run homer to left field in the bottom of the second before the Cougars pushed across six more runs in the bottom of the fourth, sending Sulphur packing 9-1 Thursday evening at Cougar Field.

    The East Central University softball team clinched a spot in the 2014 Great American Conference Tournament with a sweep of Southwestern Oklahoma State Saturday in Weatherford. The Lady Tigers (25-20, 17-15 GAC) first defeated the Bulldogs (11-33, 7-25 GAC) 9-7 and then 9-0 in five innings in the second day of the series.
