Byng girls second at Harrah tourney

Harrah —

The Class 5A sixth-ranked Byng Lady Pirates slow-pitch softball team played seven games within a 12-hour period and finished second in the one-day, seven-team Harrah Tournament on Saturday.

Byng went 5-2 in the tournament and outscored the opposition by a 52-30 count while collecting a grand total of 91 hits.

The Lady Pirates started play at 10 a.m. and wrapped up play around 10 p.m., with only a 45-minute break after the second game.

Byng opened play with a 9-3 victory over Roland but fell to Class 6A 13th-ranked host Harrah in its second game.

After the break, the Lady Pirates reeled off four straight wins — 4-3 over Class 2A 18th-ranked Davenport; 9-5 over 4A 14th-ranked Lexington; 9-2 over Harrah; and 9-0 over Newcastle before falling to Class 4A top-ranked Dale, 6-2, in the final game.

Five Lady Pirates had big offensive days. Alexis Hill went 12-for-22 on the day with a double, four runs batted in and six runs scored. Teammate Sidney Fuller was 11-for-20 with one homer, one triple, two doubles, three RBIs and six runs scored.

Also for Byng, Layna Abbott went 11-for-20 with five RBIs and eight runs scored. Breana Warner was 10-for-20 with two doubles, one triple, two sacrifice flies, four RBIs and seven runs scored. Breecia Crawford went 6-for-18 and drew five walks. Crawford also hit one double, knocked in four runs and scored six times.

The tournament was originally scheduled to take place Friday and Saturday, but it was postponed due to weather. The tournament field was also shortened considerably due to several schools having their senior proms that day.
