Cougars smash Duncan, 63-43

Ada — Junior forward Cory Kilby fired in 34 points, including 18 in the second quarter alone, as the Class 4A 16th-ranked Ada Cougars rebounded from a previous night loss to hammer Duncan, 63-43, on Saturday at the Cougar Activity Center.

Ada, 11-7 on the season, was coming off a 71-67 home loss to 4A third-ranked Harrah on Friday.

Kilby, who has averaged 30.5 points per game during the Cougars’ past six contests, was 13-of-13 from the free-throw line, hit nine close-range shots and connected on one 3-point attempt.

His 18-point, second quarter, consisted of six field goals and a 6-of-6 shooting effort from the charity stripe.

“Cory has played so well in the last six games. He’s taken over the game in every category. His scoring has certainly made a difference and energy on the court is becoming contagious,” said Ada head coach Ron Anderson. “We were able to get some steals and quick attempts, thus leading to some transition baskets.”

Kilby had a solid supporting cast as well for Ada on Saturday as Jermaine Lawson added 11 points, including two 3-pointers; Walker Whitworth finished with nine points, including a pair of treys; and Tryce Prince chipped in six points.

Jamal Henderson also distributed the ball well for the Cougars to set up scoring opportunities.

“Jamal was able to find Walker open for some threes,” Anderson said.

Using full-court pressure, Ada took control early by outscoring the Demons by a 20-10 count in the first quarter with Whitworth and Kilby providing 15 of those points (eight by Whitworth and seven by Kilby). Whitworth connected for both of his 3-pointers in the first and Kilby nailed one. That pair also hit 4-of-4 free throws each during that span.

Kilby’s second-quarter scoring barrage enabled Ada to build a 39-26 halftime advantage.

“If there is any indication that four months on the football field may have affected Cory’s play early in the season, well those affects are over,” said Anderson.
