Latta freshman tosses no-hitter in first varsity action

Byng —

Freshman pitcher Madison Worcester tossed four innings of no-hit softball during her first varsity outing for the Latta Lady Panthers. And Latta coach Jim Foster only expects her to get better from here.

Worcester struck out seven after walking the first batter she faced in the Lady Panthers’ 2-0 win over Prague Thursday afternoon in pool play during the Byng portion of the Byng-Konawa Back To School Classic fast-pitch softball tournament.

“She threw the ball pretty well. She shut them down to where all we had to worry about was when we were going to score,” said Latta head coach Jim Foster. “You could tell the freshman had a little bit of jitters, but I think everybody had a few jitters and was a little nervous with it being our first game.”

The game was scoreless until Latta scratched for two runs in the bottom of the third. Maebree Abney and Maria Priest each had singles and scored runs in the inning. The first Latta run came via a passed ball, and Madison Abney knocked in Priest with a sacrifice fly.

“I wasn’t pleased with the hitting. We’re going to have to get better,” Foster said.

Latta plays Lexington today at 5:30 p.m. before taking on the host Byng squad in the 8 p.m. nightcap.

On Saturday, Latta plays an early doubleheader with Seminole and Cleveland with 10 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. contests. The third-place game is set for 4:30 p.m., with the championship game to follow at 6 p.m.
