Byng gets good Treat in Latta tourney finals

Latta —

Byng continued its tournament trend of solid pitching and shut down Asher 5-2 to claim the championship of the 2013 Latta Invitational Saturday at Panther Park.

This time, it was Shawn Treat on the mound for the Pirates. He struck out 10 and scattered six hits in the complete-game outing.

“I am extremely proud of our boys. Shawn Treat did a good job pitching, keeping Asher off balance. They are a good team, and it is a good win. We had timely hitting. It was a great team effort,” said a jubilant Byng head coach Shawn Streater after the game.

Byng, ranked No. 1 in Class A, improved to 15-1 on the year while Asher (No. 2 in Class B) fell to 14-4.

The Pirates got on the board in the top of the first inning. Braden Fortner got the first of his two hits, a single to left. He moved to second after a walk was issued to Joe Nemecek. Fortner moved to third on a grounder to the right side and scored on a balk. Designated hitter Andre Davis singled to right center to drive in another run and put Byng up 2-0.

A solo home run over the left field fence by Tanner Andrews cut the Byng lead in half at 2-1.

Asher missed a great opportunity to score in the bottom of the third. George Merchain, Caleb Dubler and Tim Johnson each singled to load the bases for the Indians with one out. But Treat struck out Asher’s three and four hole hitters to get Byng out of a jam.

In the top of the fifth, Byng added to its lead. Hunter Capps singled and Fortner knocked a homer over left center to push the score to 4-1. Reid Wall was walked and then scored off of two consecutive Asher errors for a 5-1 lead.

Asher scored once more in the bottom of the fifth. Ryan Pybas doubled off the left field wall and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Dubler to account for the final 5-2 score. After the fifth, Asher never managed another base runner. Treat singlehandedly got the last six outs of the game. He struck out four, and two balls were hit back to him that he threw to first for the other two outs.

Fortner went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs to pace the Byng offense. Capps, Nemecek, Andrew Daniel and Zeke Lumley all were 1-for-3 for Byng.

For Asher, Johnson finished 2-for-3 in the game and 8-for-11 for the tournament. Dubler was 1-for-2 with an RBI, and Andrews went 1-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI.
