Brandon Christian proves a good catch for Ada coach Matt Weber

Ada —      In February, Ada head coach Matt Weber went fishing and caught a coach.

Attending the Bassmasters in February, Weber ran into an old college teammate. Besides fishing for bass, Weber also had on his mind fishing for a coach to replace Greg Mitchell, who had resigned in mid-year.

Enter Brandon Christian, a fine catch weighing out at 6-4 x 240 pounds or so.

“I asked if he would be interested in the job. One thing led to another,” Weber said.

The  two had been instrumental in the 1994 NAIA national championship for Northeastern State University at Tahlequah. Christian, a wide receiver and tight end, caught a big pass from quarterback Weber to help seal the victory.

After college, Weber stayed in the southern part of the state to coach. Christian stayed north around the area he was raised — Tahlequah, Jay, Pryor, Grove and the longest stay at Claremore, 2006-11, until moving on to Salina last year.

A 1992 Tahlequah grad who will teach at AJH, upon arrival in Ada, big bass boat in tow, Christian discoverd a warehouse of potential receivers.

Senior Scott Johnson’s 13 receptions for 106 yards leads the pack.

Mirror images Jamal Henderson (7 5-9 140 jr) and Montrell Black (8 5-9 141 jr) will serve strong roles in the slot receiver position.

The two are nearly identical in height, weight, speed (two of the fastest on the team) and ball skills.

Six-foot-seven junior Cory Kilby and 6-5 senior Bryson Albert share two things: towering height and being prep football novices.

The four-receiver set causes problems for opponents, and having the twin towers on the field at the same time can create headaches for the opponent.

Kilby, the power behind Ada’s last two varsity basketball teams, returns to football after a two-year absence. He said he simply missed the game.

Albert nursed leg injuries and other ailments for two seasons before returning for his senior campaign.

Osahwv Frazier (15 5-9 150 jr.) will also pull triple duties as a slot receiver, back-up QB and return specialist.

Still another candidate, Kobe Bellard, provides great depth at the outside receiver because of his size (10 6-3 222 jr.).

Levi Grimes and Katy, Texas, transplant Jake Martinez look to be incoming sophomores who could help on Fridays.
