Ada Lady Cougars ground Guthrie

Ada — Ada senior post Aaliyah Blakley poured in 18 points and Lady Cougar sixth man Olivia Wells chipped in 14 to go with five rebounds in the Lady Cougars’ 50-38 Saturday night win over Guthrie in the East Central Oklahoma Classic third-place game.

After leading by just one point, 16-15, at the half, Ada opened things up and poured it on the Lady Bluejays (No. 13 in Class 5A) in the second. The Lady Cougar defense forced seven Guthrie turnovers in the third quarter, led by five steals by Ada seniors Markeisha Black, Haley Dean and Meneé Thomsen. Blakely and Wells were scoring inside, and senior guard Sami Jewett hit a couple of key outside shots to propel Ada’s 34-27 lead at the end of the third.

The Lady Cougars (No. 6 in 4A) pulled away in the final frame as Wells grabbed seemingly every rebound, which stifled any Lady Bluejay offensive momentum. Ada ran a slowdown offense beginning at the 4:00 mark and held on to a 39-29 lead. The Lady Cougars cruised home from there.

Blakley led all scorers with 18. In addition to Wells’ 14, Jewett scored six, Dean five, Black four and Thomsen hit the only shot she took, a 3-pointer.

“It was an ugly first half, but a very good second half,” Ada coach Christie Jennings said. “We came out tired and leggy in the first after all the games, but we picked it up later. Olivia came in and gave us good minutes.”

The Lady Cougars coach was pleased with the team’s performance in the tournament.

“This is a tough, tough tournament,” she said. “Lots of bigger schools with good programs. Ada is one of the two smallest schools in this tournament. Any time you can win two games in a tournament like this one, you’ve accomplished something very good.”
