East Central University’s Human Resources Club will continue a long-running tradition next week, when the club hosts its community Thanksgiving dinner.
This year’s dinner will run from 5:30 until about 7:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 25, at the Pontotoc County Agri-Plex, 1710 N. Broadway. The event is free and open to the public, and it will include face painting for the kids.
Nearly 3,000 people turned out for last year’s dinner, and organizers are expecting a similar crowd this year, said club adviser Dr. Steven Roring.
“So we definitely want to have all of our shoelaces tied, so to speak,” he said. “That way, we can be fully prepared to feed as many people as possible.”
Organizers will supply the food, but they rely on volunteers to help serve the meal and clean up afterward. Roughly 200 people have signed up to help so far, but additional volunteers are welcome to lend a hand.
The Human Resources Club hosted its first Thanksgiving dinner more than 20 years ago as a way of serving the community, Roring said. Today, the club works closely with other campus and community organizations to host the event.
“We’re talking Chickasaw Nation, surrounding school districts, Pontotoc County Drug Court as well as many others,” he said. “Because if it was just us doing it, it would be very difficult.”
