Commissioner, three incumbents sworn in by judge

Ada —

District 22 Judge Tommy Landrith got the new year off and running Wednesday by swearing in three sitting county officials for new terms, and one new one — District 1 Pontotoc County Commissioner Randy Floyd.

Sheriff John Christian, court clerk Ernestine Eubank and county clerk Pam Watson were the three incumbents re-elected last November.

The county officials gathered at 8 a.m. Wednesday for a ceremony that lasted about 10 minutes.

Floyd, who describes himself as a conservative, lifelong Democrat, gained the District 1 seat by virtue of having knocked off incumbent Danny Davis, who had been seeking a second term in office prior to losing a runoff election in August.

Floyd said after the ceremony he wanted to see if he could help improve county roads, many of which he says are in bad need of repair in his district.  He joins incumbents Gary Starns in District 1 and Justin Roberts in District 3.

The 55-year-old Floyd is a retired firefighter and businessman. The former owner of Advance Heating and Air said he sold his business so he would be able to devote himself fully to his new job as county commissioner.

He has been married for the last 20 years to Debra Floyd. They have five children and 10 grandchildren, he said.

Floyd said he hopes to apply the same principles in his district as he has in his business. “You can’t blow money you don’t have in a small business, and I think you run a county the same way," he said.

He also looks forward to working with and debating agenda items with the other two incumbent commissioners.

“Three heads are better than one,” he said.
