East Central University recently announced a 5.8 percent increase in tuition and mandatory fees.

The Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education approved an average 5.7 percent increase in tuition for regional universities, according to Friday’s press release.

With the increase of $9.47 an hour, the cost for undergraduate students, according to the ECU faculty, will be $142.05 per semester based on 15 enrolled credit hours.

According to the release, “higher education officials cited record enrollments, increased operational costs and prior years of reduced state appropriations as contributing factors to tuition increases."

ECU will receive an increase of less than 1 percent in state funding this year.

In order for ECU to offer students more, the tuition increase was set at 5.8 percent and mandatory fees will be added, according to the press release.

Seminole State College charges $114.15 per credit hour, compared to ECU’s $120.26.

However, University of Central Oklahoma's tuition stands at $148.65 per credit hour.
