Woman spotted in ditch unresponsive

Ada — A woman in a ditch in Ada Thursday afternoon was reported unresponsive.

Police received the 911 report about 3 p.m.

When Pontotoc County deputies and Oklahoma Highway Patrol arrived in the 1800 block of Highway 99 South, the woman was leaning against a gate in a private drive on the east side of the highway.

Paramedics from Mercy Hospital Ada brought the woman to the tailgate of a pickup truck and provided medical assistance.

Trooper Robert Benedict asked Melody Welch, 26, to walk in a straight line. He then arrested her on a charge of suspicion of public intoxication.

She offered some resistance as Benedict and other officers attempted to place her, handcuffed, in the front seat of a patrol car.

She told officers she had been beaten but no bruises were found on her.

Benedict then took Welch to jail on the charge.

It was not known how Welch might have gotten to the location. Police continue to investigate.
