Education forum focuses on school finance

Ada — Oklahoma needs top-notch schools, good roads and a stable safety net for poor people if the state wants to flourish, a spokesman for the Oklahoma Policy Institute said Monday.

Oklahoma’s ability to provide those services depends on proper funding for state government, which would allow the government to work with other organizations to expand opportunities for all Oklahomans, said OPI director David Blatt.

“But the reality is, we’ve fallen far behind in funding state government at levels that are adequate to meet our goals,” he said.

State funding for schools dominated the discussion during Monday’s education forum at the Chickasaw Nation Community Center. The Chickasaw Nation, the OPI and the advocacy groups Together Oklahoma and Oklahoma Assets hosted the event.
