Ada veteran among state honorees

Ada —      Jack Jones said he had never been out of Pontotoc County, let alone America, when he signed up for wartime infantry duty in 1950. Not only did he and 37 other Adans leave their hometown, Uncle Sam flew them halfway around the globe to Korea, a country they had only read about in the newspaper.

     Cpl. Jones was an infantry rifleman with the 45th National Guard Division.

     “We relieved the First Cavalry in the middle of the night on the front lines in December 1951,” he said. “We lived in open bunkers for 57 days in the same clothes.” Bunkers consisted of snow-covered holes in the ground.
