Vanoss —

People interested in serving on the Vanoss School District Board of Education may file to run for the on the board in December.

Candidates for board position 3 may declare their candidacy between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Dec. 3 through 5 at the Pontotoc County Election board office, according to a news release from the Vanoss School District. The election is scheduled for Feb. 12, 2013, and a runoff election will be slated for April 2 if none of the candidates receive more than 50 percent of the vote.

The winner will serve a five-year term on the school board.

Candidates must be registered to vote, and they must live in the district for at least six months before the filing period begins. They cannot seek a spot on the school board unless they have earned a high school diploma or a certificate of equivalency.

School district employees and their relatives may not run for the school board, but that prohibition does not apply if the candidate is related to a substitute teacher or a temporary substitute support employee if the district has an average daily membership of less than 5,000.

The successful candidate must complete at least 12 hours of instruction on education issues within 15 months of the election, according to the news release. The candidate must also complete six hours of instruction on changes in school law.
