Two veteran councilmen, one newcomer elected

Ada — Voters returned two Ada City councilmen to the panel Tuesday and chose a newcomer to fill the third slot.

Incumbent Mayor Greg McCortney and Councilman Darrell Nemecek easily defeated their opponents in the primary election, according to unofficial election results. McCortney cruised to victory with 409 votes, while his opponent, newcomer Don Rice, finished with 193.

McCortney said he was eager to begin his second term on the council.

“I’m excited and looking forward to two more years of continuing to serve and move Ada forward,” he said.

He said his goals include taking steps to protect the city’s water supply and moving forward on the Penny for Our City initiative. The campaign is funded by a one-cent sales tax, and the proceeds are earmarked for six capital improvement projects including new fire and police/911 stations.

Nemecek scored 380 votes to beat Don Rice’s brother and fellow newcomer, Bill Rice, who had 223 votes.

Nemecek did not immediately return a call seeking comment.

The third seat on the council went to newcomer Bryan Morris, who finished with 377 votes. His opponent, fellow political newcomer Daniel Mull, picked up 217 votes.

Morris said he was looking forward to serving the city as the councilman for Ward I. He added his goals include learning the way the city works and helping shape public policy.

“I’m going to be accessible, and anyone with ideas, please come forward,” he said. “I’ll be more than glad to hear their ideas.”

McCortney and Morris both thanked their supporters.

There were only two candidates for each open slot, so there will not be a general election in April. That means the three winners will take their seats on the council.
