Local Relay for Life hosts kickoff event

Ada —

The American Cancer Society is seeking foot soldiers in the war on cancer.

The national organization is recruiting at least 300,000 Americans —including 2,000 in Oklahoma alone — for a study examining the roles that lifestyles, genetics and the environment play in a cancer diagnosis. The results may give researchers new clues about what causes cancer and how to prevent it.

Ada was chosen as one of Oklahoma’s five enrollment sites for the study, based on the community’s record of raising funds for cancer research, Relay for Life officials said during a kickoff event Thursday at People’s Electric Cooperative.

Relay Co-Chairman Greg McCortney said his father and grandparents died of cancer, and he welcomed the chance to participate in the study.
