State agency seeks research ideas

Ada —

Nearly three decades ago, Oklahoma officials were looking for ways to diversify the state’s economy and help it grow.

Wth that goal in mind, the Legislature created the Oklahoma Center for the Advancement of Science and Technology in 1987. Lawmakers wanted the agency to invest in technology-based projects that could boost the state’s economic fortunes.

Twenty-six years later, the agency is still promoting Oklahoma’s existing businesses and encouraging people to start new ventures.

“We’re going around the state, recruiting people who have good ideas, who can take ideas and turn those into innovation and turn that into commercialization,” Executive Director Michael Carolina said in an April 22 interview. “Because when you do that, you create jobs — high-paying jobs. You create start-up businesses, and you help existing businesses to grow.”

Carolina said the agency is seeking entrepreneurs across the state, including the Ada area.
