Ada firefighter reaches championship

Ada — GRAND LAKE — Chances are Ada firefighter Mike Zachary is fishing right now.

He is competing in the Bass Federation National Championship held at Grand Lake in northeastern Oklahoma. The championship began today and runs through Saturday.

Zachary will fish with a co-angler today and Friday, working to garner the largest stringer, five bass are allowed for each angler, each day.

Three official practice days were  held Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Zachary and fellow angler Johnny Babb spent those days searching for bass hots pots and finding the best lures to use.

According to the Bass Federation’s website, “The entire field will compete Thursday and Friday with weigh-ins lakeside at the new Wolf Creek Park in Grove.”

The field will then be cut to the top boater and co-angler from each of the seven TBF divisions.

“TBF National Championship anglers will compete for their share of nearly a quarter of a million dollars in cash and prizes. Every TBF championship angler will receive a check and other prizes. In total, 16 berths will be awarded in two of the sport’s most coveted events – the Forrest Wood Cup and the BFL All-American presented by Chevy.”

Zachary’s tournament journey began in 2013.

“I started in March of last year,” Zachary said. “There are six state qualifying tournaments and they take the top four scores from those six tournaments and make a 12-man team. From that 12-man team, you go to an eight state regional.

The top two men in that 12-man team advances to the national championship.”

So who was first place from that 12-man team? Mike Zachary, of course. Second-place finisher was Johnny Babb.
