City OKs site for sports complex

Ada —

Ada City Council approved a site for the proposed sports complex on Monday, clearing the way for the city to move forward with the project.

Council voted 4-0 to select a 65-acre parcel of land on the east side of state Highway 99, due east of the Council on Law Enforcement Education and Training center (CLEET). Councilman Guy Sewell was absent.

The land is owned by the Ada industrial Development Corp. (AIDC), an economic development agency dedicated to growing the community (See map on page 2.) Shawnee-based Grace and Sons Appraisal Service will determine the market value of the property so the city can make a purchase offer to AIDC.

Once the city acquires the property, the architect, planner and city staff will design the complex. After that stage is finished, construction will begin.

Council accepted on a recommendation from the Citizens Advisory Board, which oversees a series of capital improvements known as the “Penny for Our City” projects. The CAB’s sports subcommittee drew up a list of five possible sites for the sports complex and made a recommendation to the full board, which submitted the recommendation to city council.

The committee also considered four other sites, including a location near Ada Municipal Airport, according to information from city hall. The three other sites were northeast of Lonnie Abbott Boulevard and Country Club Road, east of Monte Vista and near Pontotoc Technology Center.
