Court declines to weigh in on case

The U.S. Supreme Court is staying out of the debate over whether a fertilized human embryo should be defined as a person. 

The nation’s highest court declined on Monday to hear a legal challenge to an Oklahoma Supreme Court ruling, which said that a proposed ballot question on the personhood issue was unconstitutional. The higher court did not give a reason for declining to take up the case, which means the lower court ruling will stand.

Officials with the national anti-abortion group Personhood USA were not surprised by the justices’ decision, said communications director Jennifer Mason.
