From one Ada to another, firefighters make stop

Ada — Friday, Ada firefighters visited with Ada firefighters.

Normally, this wouldn’t be a story, as Ada firefighters visit with each other everyday, but some of the Ada firefighters Friday were from Ada, Mich. While journeying across the country, Ada Township firefighters decided to stop by and visit the local firefighters. Due to the massive fertilizer explosion in West, Texas, which occurred in April and killed 15 people, Ada Township firefighters drove a fire truck from Michigan to Abbott, Texas, to donate it to the Abbott Volunteer Fire Department. Brandon Holmes was among the firefighters from Michigan taking the truck to Abbott.

“We’re donating our fire engine from Ada, Mich. to Abbott, Texas, where they lost both their apparatus and some men in the fertilizer explosion in April,” Holmes said. “They were assisting West, Texas.”

What brings them to Ada, Okla.? Ada, Michigan, firefighters have always known about Ada, Okla., since it’s not a common town name, so they thought they would stop and check it out.

“When we found out where it was on the map, it was just a little out of our way so we just thought it’d be neat to kind of see the other fire-rescue guys from here and stop by and see your town,” Holmes said Friday, “because we’re also from a sister town. We just thought it would be kind of cool.”

The Ada Township Fire Department sold commemorative t-shirts to raise money for fuel to drive the truck on the nearly 1,200 mile journey. On July 4, Ada Township started out with 50 t-shirts which sold out that day. They received a second shipment of 100 shirts which also sold out in one day. Eventually, Ada Township firefighters sold more than 1,500 shirts across 14 states. They plan to donate excess proceeds toward fire equipment for Abbott and West.
