Woman dies in head-on collision

Union Valley — One woman is dead and another woman is in critical condition after a two-vehicle accident near Union Valley just before 3:30 a.m. Saturday.

According to Oklahoma Highway Patrol Trooper Darian Galloway, 28-year-old Misty Spears of Stigler was driving west on Sate Highway 3 when a car going east went left of center and slammed head-on into her 1994 Mazda.

Spears, who was ejected six feet from the vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene by Oklahoma State medical examiner Leroy Johnson. A passenger in Spears’ vehicle, Aimee Crippen, 24, Ada, was pinned for 20 minutes before being freed by Ada firefighters using hydraulic cutting and prying tools.

Crippen was taken to Valley View Regional Hospital in Ada and later transported by Medi Flight to St. Anthony’s Hospital in Oklahoma City. She was admitted in critical but stable condition with internal injuries.

Galloway said the driver of the 2007 Ford that went left of center, Scott Sheperd, 27, Chester, Ill., refused treatment. Two passengers in Sheperd’s vehicle, Cassie Wright, 22, and Justin Holifield, 20, both from Coalgate, were not injured.

Based on his investigative opinion, Galloway said the cause of the accident was driving under the influence and listed Sheperd’s condition as ability impaired by drinking. He said seat belts were in use by all occupants in Sheperd’s vehicle and it is unknown if seat belts were in use by Spears or Crippen.

Galloway was assisted by OHP troopers Brett Sayre and Alan Fortner. Firefighters from Union Valley, Pontotoc County sheriff’s deputies, Chickasaw Nation Lighthorse Police and Stonewall police responded.
