Scam attempted on Ada woman

Ada — A man reported to police Tuesday someone tried to scam his grandmother.

The man reported someone called his grandmother saying it was him and tried to get money from her.

“(The man) stated that his grandma received a phone call from a man claiming to be him,” Ada police officer Joe Machetta wrote in a report. “The man on the phone told (the grandmother) that he was (her grandson) and that he was involved in an altercation in Mexico and he originally needed $40,000. When she said she didn’t have that kind of money, the man changed it to $14,000.”

The grandmother told the scammer she didn’t have that kind of money either, but would call her grandson’s parents. The man said not to contact them because they would “freak out.” The man insisted she raise the money and he would contact her later. The woman told her grandson what had happened and he reported the information to police.

“I informed the (grandson) if they call back, ask for a number to call them back at and let them know she has the money for them and a banking account number that she can wire it to, then bring that information to us,” Machetta wrote.

Ada assistant police chief Jeff Crosby said people should never send money in a situation such as this and the scammers often prey on older residents.
