Son saves the day after wreck

Ada — A 10-year-old boy saved the day after the vehicle he was riding in crashed into a ravine Monday.

The boy, Harley Cobb, was riding in a pickup with his father, 61-year-old Gary Cobb when the wreck occurred at the intersection of County Road 3610 and CR 1520 about 11:30 a.m. Oklahoma Highway Patrol trooper Alan Fortner said Gary Cobb and his son were on their way to a local eatery to get lunch when the wreck occurred.

Fortner said Gary Cobb was driving a Chevrolet pickup south on County Road 3610 when, after slowly topping a hill, the truck began to slide and Cobb was unable to stop. The truck slowly skidded across CR 1520  and into a ravine, nose first. The truck then flipped onto its roof, crushing the passenger-side roof. Both doors of the pickup were wedged shut. Harley Cobb, unable to get his door open and unable to go out his window, slid out the driver’s-side window and ran to a neighbor’s home for help. The neighbor called 911.

According to radio traffic, firefighters from Happyland arrived and spoke with Cobb as he was pinned in the wreckage. Cobb told firefighters he wasn’t injured and firefighters were able to pry the door open slightly by hand. Firefighters from Ada and Homer arrived and together with Mercy EMS, removed Cobb and placed him in a rescue basket to get him up a steep hill of the ravine. He was taken by Mercy EMS to Mercy Hospital Ada as a precaution, Fortner said. Harley Cobb was not injured. Pontotoc County sheriff’s deputies also responded.
