Police investigate stabbing

Ada — Ada police are investigating a stabbing that occurred Thursday night.

No arrest has been made and police are investigating whether or not the stabbing was in self defense. Police responded to the residence of Jason Merritt in the 700 block of W. Fourth Street at 9:23 p.m., according to a report by officer James Gastineau.

Gastineau said when they arrived, the man stabbed, 32-year-old Clifton Dewayne Hawk of Ada, was lying in the front yard of the residence. Merritt, 32, suspected of the stabbing, was kneeling beside him, Gastineau wrote. Police cleared the scene and EMS and firefighters rendered aid.

“(Hawk) was very combative, cursing and trying to fight the fire and EMS personnel, as he was being treated,” Gastineau wrote. “(Hawk) was then secured to a back board and loaded into an ambulance (before) he was transported to Mercy Hospital Ada.”

Gastineau said Hawk had a stab wound to his chest just above the sternum. On Friday, police said the wound was not life-threatening. While clearing the scene, Gastineau said a knife believed used in the stabbing was located.

“As we stepped inside, I observed a Bowie-type knife with approximately a 6-inch blade in front of the couch,” Gastineau wrote. “The knife appeared to have blood on the blade. Also, there was a large pool of blood located on the floor between the coffee table and the couch. There was also smeared blood on the coffee table, blood on the couch, blood on the curtain behind the couch and drops of blood on the back of the front door and along the door jamb.”

Merritt and a witness, 25-year-old Damara Smith of Ada, were questioned by detectives who continue to investigate the incident.
