Ada —    The Ada Lady Cougars could do little wrong during the first quarter of Friday night’s East Central Oklahoma Classic second-round game.

But that blazing start, led by senior guard Sami Jewett, came to a crashing halt in the second quarter and Ada ended up being shellacked 59-35 by the Choctaw Lady Jackets.

Jewett simply could not miss in the first quarter. She went 5-for-5 during the period. Four of her buckets were 3-pointers, and two of those were from NBA range. The Lady Jackets (ranked No. 5 in Class 6A) reacted quickly once they got a taste of Jewett, but they could do nothing to stop her. If she was pressed, she either went around the defenders or simply moved farther from the basket and hit again.

But as sometimes happens with the aggressive Jewett, she picked up her second personal foul with two minutes remaining in the first quarter. She departed for the bench after scoring 14 points in just six minutes of play. With that, the gale winds that had propelled the Lady Cougars became a stifling calm.

Ada (8-3) led 19-10 at the end of the first quarter, but it was all downhill from that point. By halftime, the experienced Lady Jackets led 24-21. Jewett returned in the second quarter and scored Ada’s only two points, those from the foul line.

By the end of the third, Choctaw (9-0) had a 36-24 lead and all the momentum. In the second and third quarters, Ada had scored just five points. Everything the Lady Cougars (No. 6 in 4A) put up simply would not go.

Jewett ended the night with 16, and senior post Aaliyah Blakley added seven points to go with five rebounds. Olivia Wells had four points, Haley Dean and Dembri Weeks had three each and point guard Meneé Thomsen did not score.

Choctaw was led by outstanding 5-10 freshman Ana Llanusa, who slashed the Ada defense all night for a game-high 18 points. Lady Jacket 6-0 junior post Maci Hanson added eight points, was a force inside and repeatedly rejected Ada shots and forced turnovers.
