'True Grit' programs slated at public library

Ada — Ada Public Library is providing a Big Read series on the book True Grit by Charles Portis that will be open to the public.

The first program will be The Comic Sensibility of Charles Portis, presented by Dr. Jennifer Kidney, former director of Let’s Talk About It, OK and freelance scholar, on Thursday, Jan. 16, at 6 p.m. True Grit is the only Western that Portis wrote, and this program will focus on The Dog of the South and his other novels, which are more overtly comic.

Kidney will return for the second program and discuss True Grit and provide biographical information about Charles Portis on Thursday, Jan. 23, at 6 p.m. She will also provide discussion questions. 

The third literary program will be presented by Dr. Lewis Parkhill, professor emeritus of English and past chair of the Department of English and Languages at East Central University, on Thursday, Jan. 30,  at 6 p.m. Parkhill will discuss the Western tradition and review both movie versions of "True Grit."

Both versions of the movie "True Grit" will be shown at the library in February. The John Wayne 1969 production will be shown on Tuesday, Feb. 4, at 6 p.m., and the 2010 Jeff Bridges production will be shown on Tuesday, Feb. 11, at 6 p.m.

Luann Waters will offer an informational program on Dutch Oven Cooking in Pioneer Days and Now on Saturday, Feb. 8, at 10:30 a.m. She will provide the history of the Dutch oven, hints for using the Dutch oven, sources for supplies and recipes. Waters is the expert on all things to do with Dutch ovens.
