Inmate worker stabbed; suspect caught

Ada — A Pontotoc County Justice Center inmate worker was stabbed at the Agri-Plex Friday evening, and the suspect was apprehended after a brief manhunt.

Emergency personnel were called just after 6 p.m. Roy Allen Shinn Jr., 37, was bleeding substantially from a single stab wound to his abdomen, according to radio traffic.

Shinn told authorities he was stabbed by 49-year-old James Dwayne Holland of Ada during an argument. Shinn was taken with emergency status to Mercy Hospital Ada. Sheriff John Christian said doctors performed emergency surgery on Shinn, but no vital organs were damaged.

Oklahoma Highway Patrol Trooper Brian Bagwell arrested Holland a short time later in a parking lot in the 400 block of J.A. Richardson Loop.

Bagwell said it appeared Holland had gone through a wooded area after allegedly fleeing the scene.

“He was wet up to his waist and covered in sticktights,” Bagwell said.

Holland was arrested without incident on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, Christian said. Holland was taken to the Justice Center. Christian said Holland brought alcohol to the Agri-Plex and shared it with Shinn prior to the argument. Christian said Shinn was left unsupervised by county staff.

“I’m not happy about it,” Christian said.

Christian is investigating how and why Shinn was left unsupervised. Holland appeared in Pontotoc County District Court Monday, where his bail was set at $250,000. He is set to reappear in court Aug. 7 at 2 p.m.
