Summer is the time of year for fresh fruit and vegetables.
This year, the Chickasaw Nation Medical Center launched its Farmers’ Market. Everyone is invited to enjoy the Farmers’ Market each Thursday at the Medical Center through October. The market is open from 2:30 p.m. to 6 p.m.
Joe Noble grows fresh produce west of Ada, and Sarah Blackwood is an organic farmer from Lavina’s Twin K Family Farm near Stratford. They were among the first vendors to set up booths at the market. Customers can choose from among a wide variety of produce including potatoes, onions, squash, zucchini, tomatoes, green beans, banana peppers and melons.
“The variety of produce will expand as we get farther into the growing season,” Medical Center grant coordinator Susan Alexander said. “I was amazed at the turnout of people we had on the first day. The market wasn’t scheduled to open until 2:30 p.m., but there was a long line of customers waiting for the vendors to set up. We are so happy to be able to provide this fresh produce to the visitors and staff.”
The Farmers’ Market was developed by the Public Health Advisory Council at Chickasaw Nation Health. This council includes members of the Department of Epidemiology, Research and Development team, Chickasaw Nation Nutrition Services, and numerous other Chickasaw Nation Health departments.
