Singing ChurchWomen of Oklahoma to perform

Ada —

Singing ChurchWomen (SCW) of Oklahoma will perform Thursday, April 26 at East Central University’s Hallie Brown Ford Center.  The free concert will begin at 7 p.m.  Doors open at 6 p.m.

Bart Morrison, Ada First Baptist Church minister of music and interim 2011-12 SCW conductor, said the auditioned group consists of 386 women from all over Oklahoma who are not paid and who travel at their own expense. Morrison said ages range from 19 to “don’t tell.”

“These ladies range from stay-at-home moms to executives of Fortune 500 companies to music teachers who give up their time to not only sing but perform mission activities,” he said. One such mission trip involved cleaning up yards, pulling out drywall and organizing clothes for the Salvation Army following last year’s devastating tornadoes in Joplin, Missouri.

Morrison said SCW actually consists of two groups, one from the east side and one from the west side of I-35. “The concert in Ada is the first that will bring both groups together,” he said.

The SCW, now in its 23rd year, will be presenting music that “Tells the Story of Jesus.”  Morrison said music will encompass spirituals, praise and worship, classical, and contemporary Christian music. “The second half of the program tells the story of Jesus from birth to resurrection to Second Coming,” he said.

The concert also includes traditional and contemporary anthem arrangements as well as dramatic scripture readings that emphasize the Gospel story. There is no admission charge and everyone is welcome to attend the concert sponsored by Ada First Baptist Church. Musical accompaniment will be provided by Ada First Baptist Church’s orchestra.

Morrison said a free will offering will be accepted that will be used only for the group’s future mission opportunities. CDs will be available for purchase following the concert.

The SCW is one of the performing groups sponsored in part by the Baptist General Convention of Oklahoma.
