Ada —

If the sight of stray animals touches your heart, the Pontotoc Animal Welfare Society is offering a chance to help them while enjoying a night on the town.

The animal shelter’s annual Christmas gala will take place from 7 to 11 p.m. Saturday at Oak Hills Golf and Country Club, 519 N. Country Club Road. For $70 apiece, guests can enjoy dinner, sip free champagne and dance to live music by Richard Payne and the band Class Act of Durant.

Guests can also participate in a silent auction which will include baked goods, artwork, books, stereo equipment and other items.

Last year’s fundraiser attracted 114 people and generated a little more than $25,000 for PAWS, which used the money to cover its operating expenses, said Mary Criswell, secretary of the animal shelter’s board of directors.

“Some years we make more, and we’re hoping to do that this year,” she said.

Criswell said 10 to 20 corporate sponsors, including banks, car dealerships and individual donors, made it possible for PAWS to host the gala at little cost to the shelter.
