Local winner returns from youth tour

Ada —

Caleb Shaw of Ada has recently returned home from an eventful, fun-filled week in Washington, D.C. Caleb, son of Ronnie and Laquita Shaw, won the 2014 Rural Electric Cooperative “Youth Tour” contest, sponsored by People’s Electric Cooperative in Ada.

The 51st Annual Rural Electric Cooperative Youth Tour began June 13 with a “Get Acquainted Banquet” in Oklahoma City. The 72 young winners, representing 25 of the state’s rural electric systems, departed for the nation’s capital the next morning.

“In my opinion, my favorite part of the trip was visiting Arlington National Cemetery and seeing how many people have given the ultimate sacrifice to protect our freedoms we have today. It’s most certainly a place every American should see in their lifetime,” said Caleb.

“Other highlights of the trip were the Newseum, where they had an Anchorman exhibit and parts of the Twin Towers and Berlin Wall; the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History, where there were floors about animals of the world and expensive minerals and gems; and the Lincoln Memorial and Reflecting Pool, where we got to take great pictures and to remember the important events that happened there.”

In addition to seeing all the historical monuments and taking photos of the White House, the Oklahoma winners toured the U.S. Capital, the U.S. Holocaust Museum, Mount Vernon and Ford’s Theatre and enjoyed a river boat cruise on the Potomac River.  The tour is coordinated each year by the Oklahoma Association of Electric Cooperatives.
