Threat against Byng school district under investigation

Byng — Authorities are investigating a threat against the Byng school district.

School officials learned Tuesday night that someone had posted a threat against the district on a social media website, Superintendent Todd Crabtree said in a written statement.

Several benign posts appeared on the site, but an individual changed the game by saying that someone was going to carry out a school shooting like the one at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., Crabtree said.

“Law enforcement was involved prior to that threat, and they are investigating this threat in the attempt to determine who is responsible,” he said.

Crabtree declined to release additional details of the threat, citing the investigation. However, he did say that Byng schools are not on lockdown because officers from the Pontotoc County Sheriff’s Office and the Chickasaw Lighthorse Police Department were present at every school site.

Ada Police Department officers were on hand at Homer Elementary School, which is part of the Byng district but is located within Ada’s city limits.

Officials posted a notice about the threat on the district’s website and alerted parents with recorded telephone messages.

Ada City Schools Superintendent Pat Harrison said district officials learned on Tuesday night that someone had issued a threat against another school on a social media site. The threat did not involve any schools in the Ada district.

As a precautionary measure, the district instituted a lockout procedure at each campus. The main entrances were locked, and school employees were seated at the doors to screen parents and visitors.

Other than the lockout procedure, Ada schools were having a normal day, Harrison said.

Pontotoc County Sheriff John Christian told The Ada News that authorities were following leads in the case, and he believed they would be able to question someone about the threats later today.
