Waurika —

Pontotoc County Historical and Genealogical Society boasts a treasure trove of material for researchers, including more than 700 digitized photos and federal census records for every state.

Fewer people are visiting the society’s library these days since they are doing most of their research on the Internet. That prompted society members to look for ways to attract more visitors.

They came up with the idea of opening a mini-museum in the library, using items from the county’s history as the basis for the collection.

“We decided that we would get some things from Pontotoc County that were pertinent to our literature here,” said corresponding secretary JaNell Fleming who serves as curator of the mini-museum.

The mini-museum contains more than 40 items from the county’s history, including old paintings, school records and a medical bag belonging to pioneer doctor H.A. Hodges. Some of the items were already part of the library’s collection, and others came from members’ families.

Fleming contributed several items from her private collection, said board member Katherine Howry.
