Racer dies after crash

Oil Center — A Norman man died after crashing a race car Saturday night at Oklahoma Sports Park near Oil Center.

According to Oklahoma Highway Patrol Trooper Tyler Jack, the crash occurred at 10:40 p.m. Jerry M. Harkrider, 57, was racing a 2014 Chevrolet stock car  when, for an unknown reason, he ran off the track, went airborne and “struck a tire stop coming to rest,” Jack said in a report.

A cause of death was not listed, however, according to radio traffic, Harkrider was being taken to Mercy Hospital Ada by Wadley’s Ambulance suffering from “cardiac arrest.” He was pronounced dead on arrival at Mercy Hospital, Jack said.
