Medical examiner: Wreck victim died from injuries

Ada — A Fitzhugh woman involved in a wreck in February died the following day from injuries she received in the crash, according to the Oklahoma State Medical Examiner’s Office.

According to a release issued by Oklahoma Highway Patrol Troop F, medical examiner Leroy Johnson notified the troop Wednesday that 86-year-old Mary L. Gibbs of Fitzhugh died the day after the Feb. 12, wreck.

The wreck occurred at the intersection of state Highway 1 and a county road five miles south of Ada. According to OHP Trooper Tyler Jack, 83-year-old Jack Dean Stark of Fitzhugh was driving a 2001 Chevrolet pickup west on a county road when he failed to yield at SH 1.

Mabrey Irene Smith, 20, Stratford, was driving a 2006 Mitsubishi south on SH 1 and crashed into the passenger side of the pickup. Smith and Stark refused treatment at the scene. Gibbs, a passenger in the pickup, was taken to Mercy Hospital Ada, where she was treated and released, according to the release.

Information was not available at press time explaining the two-month-long delay in notifying Troop F of the fatality. A spokesperson for the medical examiner’s office was unavailable for comment Tuesday.
