The Cat in the Hat comes back to Ada

Ada —

The Cat in the Hat is coming to Ada next week, and other Dr. Seuss characters are joining him for the ride..

The children’s theater company Theatreworks USA is bringing its production of the musical comedy Seussical to Ada next week. Performances are at 10 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. April 5 at the McSwain Theatre, 130 W. Main St.

Seussical’s main plot is based on the book Horton Hears a Who, which revolves around Horton the elephant’s efforts to protect the residents of Whoville. The show tosses into the mix characters and situations from other Seuss books, including some who are invented for the show.

The musical is set in the Jungle of Nool, where Horton hears a cry of help from a small speck of dust. The speck turns out to be the planet of Who, the tiniest planet in the sky.

Horton meets the residents of Who and befriends a boy named Jojo, who is scolded by his parents for thinking outlandish thoughts. While protecting his friends, Horton does a favor for a bird named Mayzie La Bird, who needs him to sit on her egg while she takes a break.

Horton agrees and sits on the egg for several months — but hunters capture him and sell him to a circus in New York.

The show blends humor, music and Dr. Seuss’ classic characters in a madcap adventure that reminds audiences of the value of friendship and loyalty.

This year marks the second time that Theatreworks USA has brought Seussical to Ada, said Jae L. Stilwell, general manager of the McSwain Theatre. She noted that the theater company staged the show at McSwain in 2011 in front of a full house.
