The U.S. Senate approved a bill Thursday that creates a path to citizenship for millions of illegal immigrants and bolsters security along the U.S./Mexico border.
Fourteen Republicans, all 52 Democrats and two independents supported the measure, which is one of President Barack Obama’s top domestic priorities for his second term. But Oklahoma Sens. Tom Coburn and Jim Inhofe voted against Senate Bill 744, saying it creates an amnesty program for illegal immigrants at the expense of border security.
Inhofe said he dislikes the bill because it gavwa the Department of Homeland Security too much authority in deciding when the border is secure. He also said the bill doesn't address federal benefits for illegal immigrants.
