Firefighters rescue woman in morning blaze

Ada — Ada firefighters rescued a woman in a house fire just south of Ada Saturday morning.

Firefighters responded to the fire at a home on County Road 1576 just after 7 a.m. where three adults and two children were able to escape the blaze, but one woman was still inside. Firefighters immediately searched the home and rescued the woman, who was located in a bedroom. She was suffering from smoke inhalation.

She was taken to a waiting Mercy EMS amblance and rushed to Chickasaw Nation Medical Center for treatment. A man, also in the home when the fire started, was taken to be treated for burns to his feet, fire officials said.

Ada Fire Captain Bill Atkinson said the main fire was in the living room of the home. He said firefighters passed the flames to get to the woman, before fighting the fire.

"You really can't do the two together," Atkinson said. "Because if you go in there to extinguish the fire, as soon as you hit it, the water will turn the house into a steambath and the steam will kill any possible survivors."

Atkinson said they contained the fire to the living area, but the rest of the home suffered a lot of heat and smoke damage. Names of the home's residents were not available by press time Saturday. The state fire marshal was called in to determine an exact cause, but firefighters believe it was unintentional.
