Ada —

The state Department of Education needs to be more open to suggestions from teachers and superintendents, a candidate for state superintendent of public instruction said Monday.

“I think there are great ideas, great need for collaboration. And I think we need to do more listening as we do some implementation of the reforms that have been passed through our Legislature in recent years,” said Joy Hofmeister, a former teacher and business owner.

Hofmeister announced her candidacy to a group of school officials and other voters at Perfect Blend Coffee House, 730 E. Main. She is running against Superintendent Janet Barresi in the Republican primary election, set for June 2014.

Barresi’s tenure has been marked by controversy over the A-F report card system for public schools, budget cuts for education and other issues, but Hofmeister said she did not have a sense of whether Barresi has fallen out of favor with the Republican Party.

A former first-grade teacher, Hofmeister is president of JLH Resources, doing business as Kumon of South Tulsa. Kumon is a local franchise of JLH Resources, which provides academic enrichment in math and reading to children.
