Communication worries prompt man to seek seat

Ada — Concerns that Konawa City Council members were not representing residents’ best interests prompted Michael Tenney to run for the council.

The Konawa man is running against incumbent Councilman James Blackwood for the right to represent the 4th Ward on the council. Blackwood is a medically retired Marine who has served on the council since 2012 and is seeking another term.

Tenney is a retired disabled veteran who served in the U.S. Army from 1973 to 1975 and again from 1980 to 1989. He served on the board of trustees of the Ada Rifle and Pistol Club for one year in the 1990s but has not held  public office, although he ran for Seminole County sheriff in 2010.

Tenney said Thursday he decided to run for the council seat because he believes the council members are not communicating with their constituents.

“We need somebody in there to represent the people, not their own personal views,” he said.

Like the other candidates, Tenney said he would like to see Konawa upgrade its water distribution system.

Tenney and Blackwood are among four candidates running for the council. The other two candidates are LaTrelle Davis, a retired homemaker who has served on the council since 2007, and Frank Shirley, a retired construction manager who is seeking his first term.

Davis and Shirley are competing for the Ward 3 seat on the council.

Konawa voters will choose the winners in a special election, set for Tuesday, Jan. 14.
